Smooth Operator

unnamed (1)

Today, as usual, is another special day in jazz. On this day in 1959, a real “Smooth Operator” was born. Her name is Helen Folasade Adu, but we know her better as Sade (though the Grammy-winning British smooth jazz band was named after their lead singer Sade Adu). This modern-day female vocalist was born in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria and sings a variety of genres including smooth jazz, jazz, soul, R&B, quiet storm, soft rock and many more. She’s also credited as being a song writer, producer, arranger, and composer. When listening to the group Sade, you can’t help but be impressed with the hot, energetic, sultry sounds of Stuart Matthewman the hard-blowing saxophone player, as well as the cool, haunting, smooth voice of the lead singer; sort of reminds you of the musical interplay between the Pres and Lady Day. JassOdyssey wishes Ms. Adu a Happy Birthday, and as a gift we would like to make ‘Diamond Life,” the debut album of the group, the “Jazz Album of the Day.”
