A few days ago we talked about ‘Gypsy Jazz” and some of the prominent musicians that make up the genre. We mentioned Django Reinhardt because it was his birthday. And now, because Reinhardt’s musical partner was born on this day, we’ll mention Stephane Grappelli. Born in Paris after the turn of the century, Grappelli played not only the violin, but also the piano, saxophone as well as accordion. He’s known as ‘the grandfather of jazz violinist.” I’m sure that modern day jazz violinist such Noel Pointer, Jean-Luc Ponty, Regina Carter, and Chelsey Green all agree that Grappelli was a great musical role model, and in a class all his own.
But before leaving, we would like to also wish Anita Baker a Happy Birthday!
