J.A. Rollins is busy writing books three and four of his JassOdyssey series. In writing book three, he has some of his characters visiting Colorado Springs, Colorado. And guess what?–they are performing at a place called the ‘Cotton Club’. That got us thinking–what other major cities have a jazz venue called the Cotton Club?
We’ve all heard of the one in Harlem that was located on 142 Street and Lenox Avenue. Tons of jazz musicians, vocalist, and dancers performed there. Some include:
Fletcher Henderson, Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Ethel Waters, Adelaide Hall, the Dandridge Sisters, Lena Horne, Billie Holiday, Nicolas Brothers, Bill ‘Bojangles’ Robinson, Stephin Fetchet, and many, many more.
While researching this book, J.A. Rollins was able to find Cotton Clubs in the following major cities: Chicago, Los Angeles, Cleveland, Culver City, Baton Rouge, Atlantic City, Indianapolis, Las Vegas, Durham, and even Atlanta. There may be others that we are not aware of. If you know more, please let the author and the jazz community know by sending us their locations.
While visiting the one in Colorado Springs, our characters had a great time and adventure, but as usual there are always surprises. You’ll have to find out by reading the book when it’s available.
